Blood center provides blood and blood components to 86 hospitals in Illinois, Iowa, Missouri and Wisconsin.  Works with volunteer blood donors and mobile blood drive host organizations to ensure blood products are available for local hospitals. Special services include autologous blood donation (when a patient donates his/her blood for upcoming elective surgery); therapeutic procedures (transfusions are performed for patients with leukemia and chronic anemia, plasma exchanges, injections of blood derivatives, and therapeutic phlebotomies for patients who have an over-production of red cells); and Youth Education (designed for elementary, junior high, or high school students, teaching them about the history of blood transfusion, details of the donation process, and the role of the community blood center).
