Veteran Rent and Mortgage Payment Assistance - Cook County - Veterans Assistance Commission

Cook County-Veterans Assistance Commission provides financial assistance in the form of loans, vouchers, etc. to help veterans pay their rent or mortgage. To support their housing needs, eligible and qualified veterans can receive up to $1,400 in direct financial assistance to be applied to past-due rental or mortgage payments or as the first month's payment towards a new rental or mortgage. This benefit can only be applied for once every 12 months.

Application process

Appointment Required. The following items must be produced by the veteran or the widow at the time of application for a VA claim or for emergency assistance: Form DD214 (or Report of Separation if prior to January 1, 1950); Driver's License OR State Identification Card for both the veteran and the spouse; Social Security Card for the veteran, spouse, and each member of the household AND a copy of the birth certificates of each child; current marriage license and any divorce decrees; the most current income tax return AND proof of all income for the vet and the spouse; earned interest statements from 401K, CDs, stocks, bonds and other investments; current checking and savings statements for last 60 days; If applicable, proof of child support or alimony payments or amounts received; all current utility bills; and proof of mortgage payments or a copy of current lease agreements. If all required documents are not brought in at the time of appointment, the request for emergency financial assistance will be denied. In-person services close at 3pm but virtual services are available until 4:30pm.
