The Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) is an independent organization within the IRS. TAS helps taxpayers whose problems with the IRS are causing financial difficulties, such as not being able to provide necessities like housing, transportation, or food; taxpayers who are seeking help in resolving problems with the IRS; and those who believe an IRS system or procedure is not working as it should. If someone qualifies for help, TAS will do everything it can to get the problem resolved. Although TAS is independent within the IRS, advocates know how to work with the IRS to get problems resolved. As taxpayers, clients have rights that the IRS must abide by in its dealings. The tax toolkit on the website can help clients understand these rights.
