- Assists blind and visually impaired individuals of all ages by transcribing materials on all subjects into large print, braille, and audio. - Provides indirect services through public/private facilities and cultural organizations to make their programs and physical plants accessible. - Sponsors an outreach community organization, The Weekenders, which provides opportunities for blind and visually impaired people to attend a wide variety of social and cultural events in the Chicagoland area. - Processes monthly billing statements in braille, large print, and audio for utilities and banks. - Store is available at the main location to purchase helpful products from the gadget gallery and devices.

Brings awareness to the community and enhances the self-sufficiency and quality of life for disabled citizens by developing and administering social program for people with disabilities.
Encourages social interactions in a welcoming environment for individuals with disabilities to form new friendships and interact with peers who share similar interests. Limited scholarships are available for those living in 9 member park districts.
Provides a variety of social programs for individuals with disabilities. Programs help participants develop social and life skills, as well as eye-hand coordination, balance, fine and gross motor skills and sensory processing.
Programs are offered for individuals with disabilities to provide opportunities for socialization, to learn or improve a leisure skill, and to integrate into the community.
Primary programs and activities include providing swim lessons for individuals with special needs through the local YMCA and scholarships for children to attend various camps, classes and summer programs. LLDSS also holds social activities and gatherings for members and their extended families. LLDSS donates to other groups or causes which provide benefit and support to people with Down syndrome including UCP and the Springfield Parks Foundation for the purchase of accessible playground equipment at Springfield’s Washington Park.
