However, withdrawal management (detoxification) alone is not a treatment for OUD and increases the risk of relapse, overdose, and death if not followed by medication-assisted treatment (MAT). Medical detoxification is the safe management of the acute physical symptoms of withdrawal that occur when drug and/or alcohol use is stopped. The healthcare team works with the patient to stabilize withdrawal symptoms and manage any other acute medical problems.
