The sale of donated items sold in retail stores supports mission programs. People in the community donate gently used clothing, furniture and household items to Goodwill. The proceeds from the sales of the donated items subsidize mission programs, giving thousands of individuals in the Omaha area the chance to earn a living, find independence and succeed in life.

Goodwill also accepts residential computers, printers and monitors at no charge, regardless of age or condition. Drop off at any Goodwill donation center. No tube TVs.

The county recycling center accepts cardboard, paper, #1 & #2 plastic, metal, glass (glass is accepted at the facility only - not in bins around the County), bicycles, barbecue grills, and lawn mowers. Jackson County Recycling Program provides various recycling services, including four locations for free drop-off of paper, cans, and bottles, one location for free drop-off of electronic items, and periodic events to shred confidential documents and to collect paint, motor oil, and other household chemicals. It also provides recycling education in schools and recycling technical assistance to businesses.

-- Southeast drop-off site: River City Recycling, 6404 South 60th Street (between Q and Harrison). This site accepts recyclables free and is a dump location for bulky items and general household waste (there is a fee for all materials except recyclables). Open Mon-Fri 8 am-4:30 pm, Sat 8 am-4:30 pm spring, summer, fall (8 am-12 pm winter).

DES MOINES METRO WASTE AUTHORITY provides waste disposal and recycling and manages the Curb It! residential recycling program and Compost It! residential yard waste collection program. Offers technical advice on recycling and waste reduction for businesses and residents (may also visit www.whereitshouldgo.com).

METRO PARK WEST (515) 333-5618, and EAST LANDFILL (515) 967-2076, both accept trash, yard waste, appliances, and tires, all for a fee.

The plant receives garbage from Ames and the surrounding communities in Story County. Private contractors are available to haul garbage, but citizens can do it themselves. The plant recovers reusable metals and garbage and recycles everything that's possible. The non-burnable material is sent to a landfill.

Recycling bins are available for food waste, glass, plastic bottles with screw-top lids, metal, clothing, cardboard, and mixed paper.

Fulton County households can recycle electronics, paint, and other recyclable items at the Health Department. No "stripped" items (those with cords or other components removed) can be accepted. Household batteries and CFL light bulbs are not accepted. Recyclables are accepted at the 3-car garage in front of the Health Department. If there is not an employee at the garage to log your items when you arrive, please check in at Room 100. Do NOT unload recyclables if Health Department staff are not available. If you cannot lift the item(s) you are recycling yourself, please bring someone with you to help. Health Department employees are not allowed to unload heavy items.
Electronics recycling is available for residential customers only. Accepts the following items: - All types of radios. - Blenders. - Cameras. - Cash registers. - Computers. - Copiers. - Curling irons. - Fax machines. - Hair dryers. - Laptops. - Microwaves. - Monitors. - Peripherals. - Phone systems. - Printers. - Televisions. - Toaster ovens. - Scanners. - Small appliances. - VCRs. The following items are also accepted: - All forms of electronic media and their cases (diskettes, zip disks, CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, DVDs, game cartridges, DAT, DLT, Beta or Digibeta, and virtually all other type of computer tapes) - not audio or video tapes. - All forms of printer cartridges, including both inkjet and toner. - All types of cell phones, pagers, PDAs and their chargers, cables and headset accessories. Note that cell phones and chargers can be dropped off at the Police department for re-use by victims of domestic violence. - All small computer accessories, such as MP3 players, iPods, digital cameras, hand-held scanners, hand-held games, and other connected devices. The Solid Waste and Recycling Management coordinates and maintains the waste and recycling program for the county on Highway 9 in Waukon. This office also monitors rural dumpsites which accept trash, recyclables, and larger items such as furniture but are not intended for appliances or constructions debris. Items that can be recycled include metal, old batteries, used motor oil, appliances, cardboard, plastic, and glass.
