The Chicago Urban League's Housing and Financial Empowerment Center (HFEC) works to support community-based investment and growth by facilitating homeownership and wealth building.HFEC is a HUD-approved housing counseling agency that provides low- to moderate-income residents with professional housing counseling assistance. We provide mortgage delinquency and default resolution counseling, pre-purchase counseling, financial capability coaching, and rental counseling. We also offer educational workshops in the areas of financial management budget counseling, homebuyer education, foreclosure prevention, and non-delinquency post-purchase.

The Pre-Purchase Education teaches potential homeowners how to prepare to buy a home, about the entire homebuying process, and how to prepare for homeownership. This education also gives participants access to certain down payment assistance programs. The post-purchase program reviews loans, property taxes, spending plans, and repairs. Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling: Our team works with clients to develop a budget and action plan to prevent foreclosure and will work with lenders or loan servicers to pursue the best options for our clients who are concerned about paying their mortgage, property taxes, or HOA dues. Referral network: Open Communities has a large network of referral partners to support a continuum of care for clients that need services that we do not currently provide. "

The Justice Laura Cha-Yu Liu Homeowners Advice Desk (formerly the Foreclosure Advice Desk) offers free legal services to homeowners in foreclosure, including information about the legal process and your rights and responsibilities during the foreclosure process.While GCLC's attorneys can also assist in preparing necessary legal documents for the case, they do not provide any type of representation in court.
