Provides case management services for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Services include advocacy, crisis intervention, information and referral services, sustaining support, self-direction assistance, and more. 

Protects citizens from contracting and transmitting infectious diseases. 

Outreach staff visit older persons or their caregivers to inform them about available benefits and services. Outreach Services may include:

- Encouraging older persons to participate in senior programs.

- Assisting older persons in gaining access to needed services (Benefit Access Application, Medicare Part D, etc.).

- Follow up with older persons and agencies to determine whether services have been received and the needs of the older person are met.

- Provide client advocacy to secure benefits.

Provides housing counseling on the topics of pre-purchase home buyer education, budget and credit workshops and counseling, post-purchase counseling, repairs for homes, delinquency and foreclosure prevention counseling.

Provides a youth residential center, youth therapeutic treatment center, youth emergency shelter, teen parenting treatment center, and a community youth shelter. Services may include professional counseling services (school-based counseling, crisis response, mental health awareness and training) and substance use services (intensive outpatient program, DUI services, DUI court ordered evaluations). 

Offers therapy that uses animals to treat patients emotionally and physically. The therapy is very effective in treating veterans, autism spectrum disorders, behavioral issues, depression, anxiety, attachment issues, and numerous other common concerns of clients.

Provides a dual-diagnosis/co-occurring mental health and substance abuse treatment facility. Services include treatment to those with substance use disorder, with or without a mental health diagnosis. Substance use treatment options vary by location, but may include residential treatment, outpatient treatment, virtual addiction treatment, and detoxification.

Also provides medication-assisted treatment (MAT) services.

Provides after school programs that includes homework help, tutoring, snack, recreation, dance, basketball, arts and crafts, cooking, computer lab, Boy and Girl scouts and more.

Provides a comprehensive preschool program that provides children with activities that help them grow mentally, socially, emotionally and physically as they prepare for kindergarten and beyond.

DCFS has the primary responsibility of protecting children and strengthening families through the investigation and intervention of suspected child abuse or neglect by parents and other caregivers.

DCFS links families with community services to address struggles families are having, offers preventative services to referred families in an attempt to keep family units together to address findings of abuse/neglect, and works with families who have children under the legal custody of DCFS while working to reunify families when possible or provide a permanent home for children.

As part of its duties, DCFS also licenses and monitors all Illinois child welfare agencies, child care agencies, domestic and international adoption providers, and group homes in the state.
